Deer Creek Speedway
First Time Winners Highlight Tasseldega Nights
Spring Valley, MN (July 15)
By: Todd Narveson
The Southeast Minnesota Corn Growers provided free front gate admission this week at Deer Creek Speedway. The corn growers of Mower, Dodge, Goodhue, Freeborn, Fillmore Olmsted and Wabasha counties were involved.
The show was also supported by Randy & Sandy Norby, K2 Ag and a number of agriculture based businesses. Some of them had booths set up to educate the crowd on the corn growers and ethanol fuels.
Another large field of 139-cars were on hand this week. The feature races had two drivers score their first Deer Creek wins and one of them was a career first.
The Dirt Doctor Truckign WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on the track first for their 18-lap feature. Jayme Hiller shjot to the early lead and was challenged by Jeremy Misgen and Don Schaefer.
Schaefer would drift high and Kadden Kath shot to second on lap three. Kobie Kath charged from ninth to third on lap nine. Hiller held a good lead until lap nine when the caution flew.
Kadden Kath clipped the inside berm on the start and dropped back. Kobie Kath shot to the lead on lap 11 but then broke to trigger another yellow.
Hiller was back out front but Adam Martinson and Tommy Myer made it three wide for the lead on the restart. Hiller regained the lead and held on for his first Deer Creek win and his first win in about 20-years.
Myer beat Martinson to the finish line for second. Christopher Deno raced from 12th to fourth and Kadden Kath rebounded back to fifth.
Zac Smith jumped from row one to lead the Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stock feature on lap one. Gavin Bartel passed Smith and led lap two.
Bartel would hold a comfortable lead while the battle for second raged on. Two cautions would slow the race, but Bartel carried on as the leader.
After the lap 13 restart, Bartel was challenged briefly by Chris Hovden. Bartel would fend him off and score his first career win.
Hovden was second followed by Luke Schluetter and 10th starter Joshua Ludeking. Adam Speicher rallied to fifth after going to the tail for one of the cautions.
A huge field of 46-Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mods were spilt into two 18-lap features. In the first one, Dan Hovden quickly got to the lead and it was over from there.
Hovden scored his 11th win of the season in impressive fashion. Gavin Shaw would challenge after a caution on lap 16, but finished second. Spencer Stock finished third with Scott Demmer and Dan Wheeler in the top five.
Brandon Hare and Hunter Kennedy had a fantastic race for the lead in feature number two. They exchanged slide jobs several times before Kennedy took the lead.
A few yellows slowed the race but Kennedy held on for his second win of the year. Hare was second with Dustin Kruse third. Garitt Wytaske was fourth and Noah Grinstead was fifth.
Kyle Falck was the class of the field in the Rochester Chevrolet USRA Stock Car feature. Falck started on the pole and took off until a caution on lap seven.
Falck took again on the start while Mitch Hovden and Kevin Donlan battled for second. Brayden Gjere worked his way up and got by both Donlan and Hovden to second.
It looked as though Falck would cruise to the win but Travis Shipman slapped the turn two wall on the final lap and brought out the yellow. That set up a green, white, checkered finish.
On the start Falck led but Gjere slid to his inside in turn two. Gjere slid up the track, spun and collected several cars for another yellow.
Falk would survive to win with Hovden in second. Kory Adam was third and Greg Jensen had a great run in fourth. Jesse Brown would round out the top five.
Kylie Kath led the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature while Kelly Shryock and Josh Angst gave chase. They went three wide on lap three. Shryock slipped past Kath for the lead on lap five.
Angst got to second on lap nine and set after Shryock. Angst caught Shryock on lap 12 and made the pass for the lead on lap 13. Three laps later the leaders were in lapped traffic.
Angst wheeled flawlessly thru the traffic and took his second win this season. Aaron Benson slipped past Shryock late in the race for second. Brandon Davis finished in fourth and Kath rounded out the top five.
